Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is an encryption-based Internet security protocol. Designed to provide security over a server, its domain(s), and networks. Several versions of SSL are used in applications such as web browsing, email, instant messaging, and voice over IP. SSL is the predecessor to the modern TLS encryption used today. The two terms are often used interchangeably in the industry.
